Weight loss and GLP-1 ad policy on Meta and Google

Weight loss and GLP-1 ads are allowed with rules on Meta and restricted on Google. Ads promoting or marketing dietary, health, or weight loss or weight gain products and services must be targeted to people at least 18 years or older. The phrases most likely to cause trouble include "lose 10kg in 2 weeks", "eat whatever you want and still lose weight", "without diet or exercise".

Meta rules Allowed with rules

Allowed for 18+ with content restrictions. Prescription GLP 1s fall under the Rx policy.

  • Ads promoting or marketing dietary, health, or weight loss or weight gain products and services must be targeted to people at least 18 years or older.
  • Banned: "statements of inferiority about physical appearance (i.e., terms, descriptions, or questions that are negative and attack an individual's appearance, specific body parts, or hygiene)".
  • Banned depictions: "Close up on specific body area by pinching fat" and "Claims that results can be achieved solely by using wearable products".
  • Banned: "clickbait tactics ... promises of specific outcomes within a set timeframe without disclaimers or qualifiers".
  • Allowed: supplement and pill ads that "illustrate people using the product ... and clearly indicate the time taken to achieve noticeable results".
  • For weight loss products that require prescription, please refer to Drugs and Pharmaceuticals ads policy". That means LegitScript, US, Canada and New Zealand only, and 18+.
  • Change on 22-23 July 2026: the explicit line "Ads must not imply or attempt to generate negative self-perception or declare there is a perfect body type" was removed. So was the ban on weight-loss "Side-by-side comparison" (which had a fitness-class exception). The inferiority-statement and pinching-fat bans remain.

Google rules Restricted

Restricted. Rx GLP 1s follow the healthcare policy. Weight loss claims follow Unreliable claims and Misrepresentation.

  • Unreliable claims bans "unrealistic weight loss within a specific time frame or requiring little effort". Its example: "eat whatever you want and lose 10 pounds in a month".
  • Misrepresentation bans "misleading or unrealistic claims regarding weight loss".
  • Banned: "Products containing human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in relation to weight loss", "Products that contain ephedra", and products that "imply they're as effective as prescription drugs".
  • Rx GLP-1 terms are promotional only in the US, Canada and New Zealand (from Oct 2025). Keyword-targeting them requires certification.

Risky creative patterns

  • Pinching fat or close-ups of a body area (explicitly banned on Meta)
  • Before/after side-by-side photos (ASA advice says do not use them for weight-loss POMs, Meta banned them for weight loss until July 2026)
  • Bathroom scales or tape measures showing a specific loss over a timeframe
  • Injection pens or vials (ASA 2025)
  • Idealized bodies paired with negative copy
  • Dramatic testimonials with "results not typical" (the FTC says this disclaimer does not cure the claim)
  • Ads appealing to under-18s or showing BMI below 18.5 (CAP 13.3)
